Depression is when someone experiences a sustained period of dejection or feeling low that seems to have little respite or it can be a low mood that seems to continue to return on a regular basis. What are the Symptoms of Mild Depression?
Typically a person with mild depression may experience any or all of the following:
Loss of appetite, broken sleep or insomnia, a constant feeling of dread, a lack of motivation, feelings of guilt, low self esteem and self confidence, a sense of being trapped with no means of escape, a sense of shame and failing, a pessimistic outlook on life (always expecting the worst to happen, a lack of energy and so on.

In the mildly depressed person only some of the above may apply for only a short period of time. In the person with manic depression many more of these symptoms may be true and can be coupled with psychotic episodes of delusions, hallucinations and a loss of a sense of reality. Anyone with manic depression should be under the supervision of a psychiatrist and will probably be prescribed drugs to help the condition.

Learn To Express What You Feel
A lot people, especially men, are not comfortable about expressing their feelings and emotions. More often than not, unexpressed sadness and anger can lead to mild depression. Thus, it may be a good idea for you to share your woes with a friend, a partner or those whom you trust. In fact, crying and letting it all out, even when you are alone in front of a mirror, can help get whatever it is you are feeling out of your chest.

Keep A Journal
Another way of banishing fear, apprehensions and despair is by writing everything down in a journal or a blog. If you decide to write a personal blog, however, it would be advisable to keep details, names and other important information to yourself. Anything on the web can be scrutinized by the public, so you don’t want to give out too many details, especially if you are whining about your boss or job.

Try acupuncture as an alternative treatment for mild depression. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of healing. Make sure to find an acupuncturist who is state certified. Most insurance companies cover acupuncture.

Check out music therapy as an alternative treatment for depression. Take time each day to listen to whatever type of music you enjoy.

Spend a few minutes out in the sun each day as an alternative treatment for depression. Studies show that people who get some sun each day experience less depression.

Opt for a healthy diet to improve symptoms of depression. Avoid sugar, alcohol, nicotine and high-glycemic carbohydrates. High-glycemic carbohydrates are found in bread, processed foods and foods that contain a lot of sugar. Foods that help symptoms of depression are omega-3s, brown rice, oatmeal and cabbage. Drink plenty of water and avoid carbonated drinks.

Start a regular exercise program as an alternative to medication to treat mild depression. Ongoing research dating back to 1981 reveals a regular exercise program can improve mild depression and plays an important role treating severe depression. For the best results, exercise at least 35 minutes a day six to seven times a week. Start a fast walking or jogging program. Keep in mind that it may take a few weeks or more of regular exercise to experience improvement.

Do Some Deep Breathing
Stress can also lead to depression. One of the most effective ways to beat stress is to do some deep breathing. If you are so mad or so sad that you want to physically hurt others or yourself, you may want to count to ten while breathing deeply. This well help calm you down and will prevent you from acting on impulses. Doing meditation, yoga and tai chi exercises can also help you deal with stress.

There are ways to handle depression that do not involve drugs, but if you are suffering from clinical depression, you should see a doctor. When you have been diagnosed with depression, sometimes it can help to learn about other people who have dealt with this problem. This lets you know that you are not alone. Reading about people who have fought depression and overcome it can also give you hope.

Here are some celebrities who have battled depression.

1. Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm is known for his work on the hit television show Mad Men. However, when he was only 20 years old, he suffered from chronic depression after his father died. Luckily, he used the structured environment of work and school to his advantage. He was in college at the time, and having a structured schedule helped him recover. He also went to therapy and took antidepressants in order to get out of this situation.

2. Ashley Judd

Ashley Judd is known for her acting talent these days, but she revealed in her memoir that she actually considered committing suicide when she was in sixth grade. She also spent 42 days in a rehab clinic in 2006 so she could get treatment for her depression. Fortunately, she has overcome her problems and says that reconciling with alienated family members has helped her heal. She also devotes quite a bit of time to charity work, and that has helped her make peace with her past.

3. Owen Wilson

To the world, Owen Wilson seems like a fun, laid back, nice guy. Unfortunately, it became apparent in 2007 when he attempted suicide that his public persona was hiding a lot of pain. Some of his friends were shocked when this news came out, but other people who were close to him said that he had had some serious problems for a while, including a past drug addiction. Fortunately, Wilson overcame his problems and was able to recover, thanks to help from his family and friends.

4. Amanda Beard

In 1996, Amanda Beard won a gold medal at the Olympic Games for swimming. Unfortunately, a subsequent growth spurt and 25-pound weight gain caused her self-esteem to plummet. Beard became depressed, and used bulimia and cutting herself as a means to deal with the pain associated with her depression. In 2005, she began taking antidepressants, which helped her start getting healthy again. She is off of medications now and has since given birth to a son. She still has bad days sometimes, but she survived her ordeal with depression.

5. Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields was one of the first celebrities to talk openly about her struggle with postpartum depression. She decided to take antidepressants to deal with her depression and wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times defending that decision. Shields also wrote about her experience in her book that was published in 2005. It is titled, Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression.

Even if you have been trapped in an unhappy marriage, divorce can still be an emotional and stressful time for all concerned, particularly when children are involved. After a divorce you may feel bereft, angry, empty and cheated.

You may be able to get over your depression with the help of friends and family, or with the aid of a trained counsellor, and for many people, depression is a natural consequence of divorce. Whatever reasons couples decide to divorce, it is very hard for many people to deal with divorce emotionally, and they almost have to go through the grieving process before they start to heal.
Ten ways to boost your mood after divorce include:

1.Smile, and the world smiles with you. Try to remain as upbeat as you can and put on a brave face, however miserable you are feeling.

2.Make a list of all the things in your life that have made you happy. Having a baby, enjoying a special holiday, your graduation from university, passing your driving test. Whatever events have made you most happy, will still make you smile and improve your mood. Happy photos can also have the same effect, but take care not to dwell on old photos of your ex, which could have the opposite affect.

3.Make a CD of all your favourite happy tunes, and play them whenever you are feeling down. Avoid sad songs, and tape or download the songs that make you want to get up and dance as soon as you hear them.

4.Write a list of all the things that make you feel happy and those which don´t cost much. Every time your happiness needs a wee boost, choose something off the list, but avoid too much chocolate!

5.Exercise is one of the best natural stress busters known to man (and woman). When we exercise, happy hormones are released into our system to give us a feeling of happiness and well-being.

6.Watch a funny film, or a DVD of your favourite comedian. Laughter makes us feel better immediately, and there is nothing like a good chuckle to raise the spirits. Alternatively, look at some clips on you tube, where you will also find videos of your favourite comedy programmes.

7.Play a word game, do a crossword or play trivial pursuit. There is nothing like distraction to lift your mood, so don´t wallow in sorrow, but do something to keep your mind active.

8.Do something for someone else, preferably someone who is worse off than you. Offer to fetch an elderly neighbour´s shopping, visit a relative you haven´t seen for years or offer your help with a voluntary agency – helping other people will make you feel happier.

9.Call a friend who has a great sense of humour, and invite them round for a meal or arrange to go out and have fun.

10.Avoid drinking too much. As tempting as it is to drink yourself silly when you are feeling depressed, alcohol will only make it worse, and you will feel doubly depressed when you have to cope with a hangover into the bargain.

If you need divorce help and advice, choose a solicitor who has an indepth knowledge of divorce law, and one who will offer online divorce papers. Getting divorced is not half as complicated as it once was, and it is unlikely you will have to go to court to finalise a divorce.
